About Sololearn: Sololeanr is an eLearning platform (web and mobile) that teaches programming languages. Sololearn maintains a portfolio of 25 courses and 21 million registered users.
Introduction: In the fast-paced world of eLearning, where digital education is becoming increasingly crucial, Sololearn had already made its mark. However, our shared vision compelled us to embark on a comprehensive journey to elevate the user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) of our learning sessions. Allow me to take you through the phases of this remarkable project, from our initial planning to the iterative enhancements that followed.

Project Goal and Significance:
Our mission was clear: breathe new life into the UI and backend solutions of Sololearn's learning sessions. We recognized that a refined learning experience wouldn't just address existing challenges, but would also position us for rapid innovation, experimentation, and ongoing product evolution.

Planning

Our journey commenced with meticulous planning. A collaborative effort across departments, we meticulously charted the project roadmap, ensuring that everyone was aligned and our objectives were crystal clear. We painted a timeline that depicted the different stages and interdependencies of the project, a visual guide to keep us on track.

Exploration

The project's heartbeat was insights into user behaviors and needs. We embarked on an immersive exploration phase, where we meticulously gathered qualitative and quantitative data. This deep dive helped us unravel the mechanics of our product, comprehend the nuances of content progression, and understand the intricate structures of our courses.

Usability Testing: Hand in hand with our community support team, we conducted usability tests with both our existing and new users. Their feedback revealed pain points,

“The experience is confusing and feels difficult.
“There are great features, but they are difficu lt to discover.

Data Analysis: Teaming up with data scientists, I was fortunate to get analytical insights into feature usage and user flow patterns, refining our understanding of our learners' journey.

Design Evaluation: The design evaluation phase was a pivotal step, where we identified critical areas ripe for enhancement. Armed with these insights, we set the stage for subsequent improvements.

☹︎ Usability Challenges

☹︎ Readability Concerns

☹︎ Brand Consistency Issues

☹︎ Platform Differences (IOS, Android, Web)

Course Creators' Insights: Engaging with our curriculum team, the unsung heroes behind our courses, was crucial. Understanding their tools, constraints, and opportunities provided a robust context for our endeavors.

☹︎ Same UI elements are used for different purposes

☹︎ There is no guidance on how to use UI elements

☹︎ The old system is very limited and not flexible

Design and Development Collaboration: The complexity of the project necessitated a unique approach. Instead of separating design and development, we chose to progress in parallel. Breaking the work into manageable milestones represented by UI elements, we maintained a steady rhythm.

Crafting the Experience

Enhancing the Learning Structure: To ensure a cohesive and effective learning journey across courses, we enhanced the learning structure. Strategically placed lesson screens, meticulously designed, paved the way for a cohesive and engaging experience, promoting microlearning and consistency.

This system promoted microlearning and ensured the learning experience was flexible and consistent across all courses.

Lesson interface

Redesigning the Lesson Interface: Embracing the challenge of design aesthetics, we embarked on redesigning the lesson interface. Exploring diverse solutions to cater to Sololearn's array of courses was a rewarding endeavor.

Testing

Beta testing brought in a dedicated group of users, known as moderators. Their insights were invaluable in identifying bugs, content glitches, and usability hurdles. This phase was pivotal in refining our approach.

Iterative Improvements

Our journey was marked by steady, iterative improvements. Backlogs of bugs and unreleased features were systematically addressed in each sprint, focusing on each platform. This systematic approach translated into tangible metric improvements.

 10 % increase in day 0 lesson completion

Conclusion

Through this journey, I gleaned invaluable lessons that became integral to my professional growth. The significance of patience, collaboration, effective communication, and meticulous prioritization was deeply etched into my approach. Skillfully navigating time constraints and embracing adaptability emerged as pivotal strategies that propelled our progress.

Reflecting on the Sololearn project, it stands as a testament to the synergy of strategic planning, data-driven insights, and dedicated design and development endeavors. The relentless pursuit of excellence, from identifying pain points to unveiling a refined MVP, underscored the fundamental value of patience, collaboration, and adaptability. These insights will undeniably steer my future projects, ensuring Sololearn's continuous evolution as a leading eLearning platform.
